Maintenance of Water Source with Simple Technology That Can Be Used Locally
As an engineer group, Michi Bushinbito (CORE: Community Road Empowerment) develops appropriate technologies, transfers them to local people, and establishes them there under a policy that the problems of developing countries should be solved by the people who live there in ways that suit local contexts. In many developing countries, infrastructures, such as agricultural roads, have been underdeveloped. To improve the situation, CORE is promoting road construction with the do-nou (soil bag) technology, a technology that is easy to learn. Adding to that, the organization is working actively on the improvement of local living environments and tree planting activities as well.
Access to safe water, environment conservation, and hygiene education on Bussi Island
On Lake Victoria’s Busshi Island, the public water supply and electricity are not widely available because of geographical conditions. As such, most residents are forced to use lake water contaminated with domestic drainage, garbage, and bodily waste. In order to change the situation, CORE is installing rainwater collection tanks in four of the island villages with poor access to safe water, aiming to develop an operation and maintenance system to be run by the residents themselves. CORE is also organizing workshops that teach safe water use and sanitation to raise residents’ hygiene awareness. Compounding this situation is the problem of excessive forest logging, which has been brought about by locals who now farm the land instead of the sea in recent years as a result of stricter fishing regulations. To counter this, CORE will engage in the nursing and planting of trees in order to restore the logged forests of the island and improve water catchment.
Michi Bushinbito (CORE) was established in 2007 with the aim of assisting the construction of agricultural roads by the farmers themselves to revitalize rural areas in developing countries and thereby contribute to global poverty reduction.
CORE is improving roads in many places worldwide with the method they developed for road development using the traditional Japanese do-nou technology. As of September 2020, CORE has been involved in projects in 29 countries with the total length of the roads it helped to develop reaching 184 kilometers.
