School-Centered Water Environment Conservation and Environmental Education
The ultimate goal of OISCA is to bring about “a world of coexistence where all people live together happily by transcending their differences and coexist with nature in harmony,” and for that goal, it has the Furusato (homeplace) Movement as the basis of its activities. The Furusato OISCA aims to develop a sustainable community where humans and other sentient beings coexist in balance with one another. OISCA's activities are practical effort to nurture and protect this Furusato. In this effort, which is called the Furusato Movement, OISCA is engaged in a variety of activities concerning human resource development, rural development, environmental conservation, and awareness raising.
Water environment improvement and environmental education classes at schools in Java
In Indonesia, the natural environment is deteriorating in recent years due to rapid population growth and climate change. The decrease of forest areas vital for the stable supply of water is causing water shortages in the dry season and floods in the rainy season. Especially in coastal areas, the damage caused by coastal erosion is serious due to rising sea levels and logging of mangrove forests. The inundation of seawater onto school premises is also critical, with some schools having toilet facilities severely damaged. As such, the deteriorating environment has a negative impact on children's education and hygiene. In order to counter this, OISCA is supporting the installment of water environment facilities, such as toilets and water tanks, at elementary schools to help provide a better study environment for children. Furthermore, OISCA is providing practical environmental education for children and teachers involving tree-planting and water environment conservation in order to raise the awareness of water-related issues and enhance the development of human resources who work actively on environmental conservation.
OISCA was founded in 1969 as an organization that promotes through its down-to-earth activities the basic philosophy of its parent organization, OISCA International, an international NGO. It engages mainly in rural development and environmental conservation activities in the Asia-Pacific region. In particular, OISCA is focusing on human resource development, providing the young people of different countries with training to be local leaders. Those who have completed the training are engaged in rural development in their respective countries. Furthermore, in Japan, OISCA is organizing educational activities that include agriculture and forestry experiences and seminars, as well as environmental conservation activities, such as tree-planting and forest maintenance.
