Towards a World Where All People Can Use Clean Water
Clean water, hygienic toilets, and correct hygiene practices. By providing these three essentials of a healthy, dignified life, WaterAid is working to improve the lives of the world's poorest and socially marginalized people. Taking advantage of water and sanitation expertise, WaterAid currently has offices in 34 countries around the world and is implementing water and sanitation projects in 26 countries, including Asia, Africa, and Latin America. In Japan, WaterAid is spreading information about water and sanitation situations in developing countries through on-site lectures at schools.
Resident-participating safe drinking water supply project in India
In India, groundwater has been decreasing rapidly in recent years due mainly to overuse and droughts. In Madhya Pradesh, among others, where the poverty rate is one of the highest in India and water infrastructure is still underdeveloped, residents have to spend an hour every day fetching water. In this project, WaterAid Japan is aiming for an environment where residents in this region can use safe water sustainably by creating a system in which residents take the lead in the installation and maintenance of water supply facilities.
Organization history
WaterAid is an international NGO specialized in water and hygiene that was established in the United Kingdom in 1981 with the vision “Towards a world where all people can use clean water.” WaterAid Japan was founded in 2013 as the Japanese branch of WaterAid with the aim to contribute to solving problems related to water and sanitation by using effectively Japan’s international aid and expertise in the field. Since then, WaterAid Japan has been promoting information about the importance of water and sanitation from Japan, the world's largest donor country in the field, as well as providing support for developing countries.
